The arrival of the summer months and the completion of the school year brought bunches of youngsters to the South Park Blocks last week to take part in youth football and basketball camps.



The Portland State football team welcomed approximately 250 football protégés, all under eighth grade, to the second annual Jerry Glanville Youth Football Camp, and the men's basketball team greeted 60 young hoopsters during the week-long training sessions.

Olivia Vivian was stunned.

"I don't know how many eye lashes I have wished upon for this result," Vivian wrote in her blog. "The feeling I have right now is indescribable! The feeling of living your dream, achieving your goal - although it's not complete yet!"

Oregon State gymnastics recruit Vivian is one of six gymnasts nominated to form Australia's women's artistic gymnastics team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

As head coach Amy Hayes was busy leading her Portland State softball squad to a 31-27 record, she was also undertaking a side project: assembling a team of Northwest all-stars to coach in a game against the U.S. Olympic team that will play in Beijing in August.



The teams will clash at historic Erv Lind Stadium at 7 p.m., July 8. The Portland Metro Softball Association is hosting the Olympic team as it barnstorms across the country in its Bound 4 Beijing pre-Olympics warm-up tour. The game is sold out, with more than 2,000 tickets sold.

Andrew Wheating is Beijing-bound. The Oregon sophomore completed his meteoric rise from seventh-best in the Pacific-10 Conference as a freshman to Olympian in one year with his trademark kick to take the second spot behind Nick Symmonds of the Oregon Track Club Elite.

Coming into the 2008 season, Ashton Eaton's best decathlon performance was good for third place at the 2007 USA Junior Championships and a mark of 7,155 points. He now finds himself in fifth place after the first day of the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, where he was seeded seventh in a field of 20 competitors.

"It's over! It's over!" yelped a random Eugene Metro FC (EMFC) fan from the crowd as the final penalty kick from Juventus' Denis Russo sailed over the goal.

Three Oregon State players, Tracy Hasson, Daniel Leach, and Robby Christner, along with the EMFC prevailed 5-4 on penalty kicks to beat Juventus Primavera in an exhibition soccer game at Papé Field in Eugene.
